Tons of chrome tabs running at all times, multitasking with a lot of resource intensive apps, like lightroom, upgrade the ram. If you use apps like lightroom, definitely ram over storage. The new m1 is a game changer.
8gb is probably fine for you. 16gb is more future proof but you likely won’t need it. The air and pro perform the same.
It will only be after long, intense sessions that you’ll see a slight performance improvement in the pro due to its fan. For the vast majority of your work, you will see no difference. The point is that for most people, a macbook air is about web browsing and light work and such.
The base model macbook air is powerful enough that — as surprising as this may sound — the extra $200. However, if ordering 16gb makes very difficult to setup reception, then there's no real hard in just getting 8gb. Do note the unified ram on m1 mac is much faster and leveraging the super fast ssd for swap will also mean anything past 8gb you may need can.

16 gb then expand ssd. The m2 8/256 has a double whammy where the 8gb ram forces more use of virtual memory and the 256 has a slow ssd. Moving to 16gb reduces vm use and dependency on the slow ssd.

I would go 16gb assuming the trend will continue. If, for example in 2 years, 16gb is the base amount. i would expect both apple (the os) and devs to leverage that with more aggressive ram use,. 8gb are enough for now.
At least for 99. 9% of the use cases. But things will look differently in a two or three years. So better max out the ram so you can use your macbook for as long as possible.
